Arabs & Jews
Photographer Helmar Lerski (18711956) was born Israel Schmuklerski in Strasbourg but was raised in Zurich.
In 1932 he moved to Palestine + began his series Arabs & Jews. The project was a response to the instrumentalization of photography by Nazi ideology. Lerski attempted to remove his subjects from any context by simply focusing on their faces. The book was never published.

Uranium legacy
Dr Gil, Uravan Town Physician
Reconstructing Uravan is a collaborative project examining the erased town of Uravan, Colorado, which supplied Marie Curie with radium and later processed uranium for cold war atomic programmes. In the 1980s, residents were relocated, and the buildings were buried. Central to the project are wet-plate collodion tintype portraits of former residents.

I'm trying to get more comfy shooting candids of human beings, and the Old Time Jam in Asheville was a good place to practice. The faces of instrumentalists are especially fascinating, looking alternately bored, transported, orgasmic....Portrait of unidentified man, possibly Sergeant Smith Prentiss (18441860) by Mathew Brady.

Nguma Foresight
Being on country, you experience the profound cultural connections embodied by two totemic beings: the crocodile and the cockatoo. One, with its stealthy grace, epitomises resilience and patience, quietly observing the rhythms of life in its environment, embodying the strength of survival.

The Barefoot Volcanologist
On the ash-covered plains of Mount Yasur on the island of Tanna, Vanuatu, Phillip an internationally recognised, self-taught volcanologist stands barefoot atop a volcanic rock bomb. Dressed in a lava-protection suit gifted to him by visiting researchers, he is framed by the smouldering volcano behind him, where a plume of gas and sulphur rises into the sky.

From Joanne B. Mulcahy, The German Modernist Who Painted a Multicultural United States, Hyperallergic, August 25, 2022: Reisss political commitment to ethnic diversity and portrayals of people of color also marginalized him among historians creating the modern art canon. Where does an artist who crossed boundaries fit in
The public selectively embraced Reisss portraits of people of color. While a 1920 show of his Blackfeet images sold out, no New York gallery would exhibit his Harlem portraits, his son Tjark lamented. That did not deter Reiss from his lifelong commitment to the diversity of people.

The lovely Miss C is a great photographer, and now runs her own studio. I had the chance to try out the place and she kindly got in front of the camera for me. Not only a great photographer but a great model.
