Portraits by Eugene Zak (1884-1926

Eugeniusz Zak was born to an assimilated Jewish family in what is now Belarus. Zaks father died in 1892 + his mother moved to Warsaw with her 8 year old son. At 16 he moved to Paris + there participated in the creation of the group Rytm, formed by artists of the Polish avant-garde. His career ended suddenly when he died of a heart attack at 41.

Galerie Zak was run by the artist's widow, Jadwiga. It had a reputation as one of the most interesting galleries on the left bank, sponsering shows of Polish + Jewish artists including Kandinsky's 1st Parisian one-man show. Galerie Zak was looted + liquidated by French collaborators + Jadwiga + her son were murdered in Auschwitz by the Nazis. Many of the looted artworks are still missing.
